"Status: In a relationship."
People's reaction, "She has a boyfriend now?!?!"
Or when if you will change your profile to "Single", you would have people promptly inquiring, "What happened?"
You'd probably think, "Effing Busybodies! You'd think they'd have better things to do."
Well, maybe they have -- but this is the lure of sites like Facebook, MySpace and Frienster. A single click creates a domino effect. That's just how social networking works. With a single click, you would have immediately informed your family, friends, old classmates, colleagues and even total strangers (especially if you have 2,000 friends) about your marriage, hook-up or the end of your 2-year marriage.
Take my friend for instance. Her husband wants out of their marriage. She couldn't do anything about it. Defying him, however, she posted their marriage picture as her profile picture and she stuck it out with "Married" status.
For several months, her husband refrained from changing his own profile -- the same picture (of them together) and status. So, everyday, she'd find herself checking if her husband has changed his picture and his status. And every time, she'd see that he hasn't, she'd breathe a sigh of relief.
Until one morning, when the inevitable happened.
He changed his profile picture, deleted all their pictures and changed his status to an "It's complicated" (this is a good status, don't you think?) one. She was devastated. To her, it was the kiss of death. She was practically inconsolable. She spent the whole day crying over the changes this guy made on his Friendster profile. It was his way of telling the world that she's out of his life -- and that to her was just devastating.
It's funny how things like this affect us. But it does -- and we can't seem to do anything about it -- unless the NASA finally discovers another Planet where people are just learning to create fire. Well... perhaps, we can go there and teach these people
