The Benefits of Oregano

Oregano (Scientific name: Origanum vulgare) is also known as Wild Marjoram, Mountain Mint, Origanum, Wintersweet and Winter Marjoram.

Hand of Hope: Samuel Alexander Armas

A picture began circulating in November. It should be "The Picture of the Year," or perhaps, "Picture of the Decade." It won't be. In fact, unless you obtained a copy of the paper, you probably will never see it.

Tracey Connelley, Baby P's Evil Mom, Shows NO Remorse

I have never been affected by any story as much as Baby P's story has affected me. Yesterday evening, I found myself sobbing twice! I just can't get over the sheer horror of the story.

Baby P's Murderers -- Why Are They Being Protected?

In my country, it has never happened before that the media and the people have been forbidden to actually reveal the names and faces of TC and SB, the murderers of Baby P.

That Winter The Wind Blows Finale: Did Oh Soo Die?

Over the holy week break, I spent the entire four days just watching the 15 episodes of this Korean show. Yes, I am a self-confessed Korean drama addict. I already have my favorite actors and actresses; albeit, I don’t know their names.

No, I did not make it.

My heart is broken.

I wanted it so bad. It's not often something happens to me that puts my faith to test. I am such in abject misery right now. Scratch that. I'm utterly depressed, almost clinically even. I wanted that badly for my parents. I have disappointed them a lot of times and I wanted them to be proud of me. Right now, I'm not 28. I am not a mother. I am not married. I am once again my parent's little girl who just wanted to please her mommy so much.

I feel such a miserable failure. I've lost all focus and I've lost all directions.

I am so angry. I can't help but curse at my fate and curse at my fate's holder.

All I can keep thinking about is, "What the fuck do you want from me?"

I really tried my best. Nobody truly understands but people's kindness is killing me. It's beyond failing or not failing. It's all about the story behind that. It was my payment. It was supposed to make things better. It was supposed to make up for all that was expected of me.

I supposed it wasn't my time. I supposed I didn't try enough. The bottom line is that I am miserable. I have never been this miserable my entire life.

I am so glad my little sister is coming home next week. She always knew the right thing to say. She is that one person in my life where I knew no matter what -- I screwed up or not -- she'd always be right there. No judgment. I guess, it's a force of habit. We grew up without our mother so we learned to watch out for each other's back. I'd kill for her. She'd do the same for me.

I feel better after all that venting. Now, I'll just go back to moping and cursing and watching old DVDs.

I Got Tagged

I've been tagged twice by Niña and Jade. I'm supposed to write seven things about me that people do not generally know. Since, I've been tagged twice -- I thought, "what the heck?!"

So, here goes. (By the way, I posted this before. I am merely reposting it.)

1. If we are not really close, you wouldn't know that I wrap my feet with mosquito net when I go to sleep. Now, you'd probably think that's weird but I'll have you know that 2 out of 10 people in this freaking country have the same affliction.

2. I love cartoons. I don't think I'll ever grow out of loving it. I seem to love Jimmy Neutron these days. Weird.

3. I love country music -- American country music, that is. The sappier, the better.

4. I am a Catholic but I question the doctrines. But I will not ever change my religion.

5. I believe I have failed the Bar Exams and I am just waiting for the results to confirm that, but I worry that I probably jinxed it by believing that I failed.

6. I don't want to regret my life. Period. So, I leave no room for thinking, "Do I regret my life?"

7. I am afraid to die but sometimes I think I'll die ahead of people I really love. Morbid thoughts.

This is an open tag. Anyone who likes to participate may do so.

Still Sick

I'm still sick. I've been sick for the past three days. I have a bad case of flu and head cold. It sucks. I'm also utterly depressed. I've fully convinced myself that I didn't pass. I just want to sleep and wake up in June. The release of the results will be tomorrow or on Saturday.

How Do You Imagine Your Funeral?

Her coffin was awfully large -- not the usual coffin you'd usually find. People would peer at her and would turn back smiling.

She had her way.

She always argued that dying is like sleeping forever and what better way to sleep forever but to sleep comfortably. So, they had her lying on her side. With a leg casually lying on a pillow. Her legs were carefully wrapped with mosquito net.

Nobody was crying. She didn't want people to mourn. She wanted people to celebrate her life. Nobody was wearing black or white. And there were balloons everywhere! The place was filled with white daisies, red tulips and white roses. It was not a wake. Curiously, it more of a party than a wake.

Her friends were all there. Old friends and new ones -- all celebrating a life she fully lived. They knew it too. So, nobody was mourning. There was nothing else left for her to do.

So, when they finally laid her to rest. They knew she was happy to oblige.

This is how I imagine my funeral to be like. How do you imagine yours?

Sick! Sick! Sick!

I have not been feeling well. I would go online and read my favorite blogger's posts but I haven't been well enough to leave intelligent comments. I have this head cold which really sucks. I am blaming the bar results for this. I am so stressed out. And I hate that 12% passers only rumor.

Oh, crap. I really am not doing so well with this waiting game.

Update: I read that 90% of the barristers failed the Political Law exam and 70% failed the Labor Law subject. Only 9% passed the bar exams. So, that's like 522 of 5,800 barristers.

Oh, crap. crap. crap. crap!

The White Cat

I do not know if you're superstitious enough to actually believe in dream interpretations. I've had a 1.0 grade in psychology where I learned all about dreams and dreaming. And there was nothing about a white cat warning you of a bad omen in any of those textbooks. I should know I practically memorized the textbook.

I had a dream last night of me turning into a white cat and a huge hand. One big huge hand. It's like the hand in the Adams Family, but this hand is really, really big -- practically the size of a man.

So, I got up and promptly went online to check the meaning of these two symbols. I got the white cat and I got these interpretations --

Dreaming of white cat means good luck. To dream of a white cat means luck in creativity, spiritual matters, divination and spellcraft.

To see a cat in your dream, signifies much misfortune, treachery, and bad luck.

Luck or bad omen?

Damn dream interpretations! They're killing me! I'm waiting for the bar exam results. Damn it! I feel stupid that I'm letting these dreams get into me. I was also looking for the meaning of that Adam's Family hand and I couldn't find a goddamn thing about it. *sigh

Overzealousness or Pure Crap?

A 15-year-old boy has been crucified in the Philipines today in a gory ritual to mark the death of Jesus Christ.

Dozens of Filipinos, including the boy and an 18-year-old girl, were nailed to crosses and scores more whipped their backs into a bloody pulp as the country's devout Roman Catholics marked Good Friday.

The voluntary crucifixions in the northern Philippines were the most extreme displays of religious devotion in this mainly Catholic country, where millions are praying and fasting ahead of the Easter weekend.

In the small village of Cutud, about 80 km (50 miles) north of Manila, men cried out as nails the size of pencils were driven into their hands and feet before they were hoisted up in the scorching heat. Nineteen were to go through the process.

But government health and safety officials were keeping their eye on proceedings, after health minister Francisco Duque told those planning to be crucified to ensure they have a tetanus jab and use sterilised nails.

Never mind the clear dangers to your health of crucifixion, so long as the danger of infection is safely reduced.

Thousands watched the spectacle in Cutud, which has grown from a village production started in 1962 to a media and tourist attraction copied in other parts of the country.

For hours before the crucifixions lines of men, hooded and half naked, flayed their backs with bamboo whips and paddles tipped with broken glass. Blood splattered over the road.

The atmosphere was festive, with hawkers selling beer, ice-cream and souvenir whips. VIPs watched from a specially elevated "viewing platform".

The country's dominant Catholic Church disapproves of the crucifixions and flagellations as a misrepresentation of the faith.

"The spiritual dimension is totally lost, and it's entered into only because of some shows, some manifestations for other people to be satisfied with or to see," said Bishop Deogracias Iniguez.

"Many of these penitents, those who are practicing these physical afflictions have a meagre, have a shallow understanding of these practices."

Some foreigners have previously been crucified including a Belgian nun and a Japanese man, who later allowed footage of his ordeal to be used in a pornographic film. No one has ever died during the rituals.

Over 80 per cent of the Philippines' estimated 90 million population are Catholic and across the archipelago this weekend will be a time for church ritual, family and the beach.

Filipinos infuse their Catholic faith with local superstitions and some people avoid taking a shower or doing laundry after 3 p.m. (0700 GMT) on Good Friday - the time Chrst was believed to have died - for fear of bad luck.

Crazy People are the Most Interesting People in the World

"Crazy" people fascinate me. In fact, I think that they're the most interesting people in this planet. Have you noticed that geniuses have a tad of craziness in them? No, I do not want to go into rhetorics discussing the word "crazy". I do not mean to offend. Let's just say I just can't think of any politically-correct word to use at this moment. I do not want to go into a full-length discussion discussing the horrors of being mentally ill. I do not need to know from you. I've witnessed it myself.

I remember Sussette, a friend of mine, once said that if she has a huge problem that she can't deal with, she'd rather go insane than commit suicide.

"I could run in the streets butt naked and I wouldn't care!" she added.

Sometimes, that's the beauty of it. You are not restricted by the boxes that people put other people in. You can go to work without a tie and nobody would think that's strange. In fact, you could go to work in your jammies! People would probably cluck their tongues but they know you're crazy so what the heck. Of course, you'd get fired because you didn't comply with what's expected that's why.

Have you noticed how good it feels to remove your tie at the end of the day? How great it feels to take off your shoes? We function like the world expects us to. Crazy people do not give a rat's ass.

They create wonderful paintings and cut off their ear. They run butt naked on the streets shouting, "Eureka! Eureka! (Now, that one was not crazy. He was just strange). They'd write books that you'd find in your English curriculum a century after their death. They possess the most outlandish ideas. (I'm not referring to Xenu-like ideas here, okay?) They have the greatest passion and they create masterpieces.

No, being crazy is not easy. It's hell, in fact. However, it beats the hell out of being fucking boring. Again, please spare me the political discussion on how you'd rather be boring than be crazy.

Resurrecting the Gods

To some she may seem an oddity, but to one Indian couple their newborn daughter is simply a God reincarnated.

Their as yet un-named four-day-old baby girl was born with two faces, two mouths and four eyes in the rural Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, 50km north east of New Delhi.

Her parents, Vinod and Susham Singh from a village called Sani, said their little girl was "a gift from God".

Excited villagers claim she is the reincarnation of the Indian God Ganesha and celebrated her arrival with clapping, cheering and offerings of gifts and money.

Doctors who delivered the baby said she appeared to be in good health, but said further tests will need to be carried out to determine any long-term health problems she may have.

hey are also unable to say if she will be able to eat and function normally.

The excitement surrounding her arrival comes two years after the birth of another little girl, from the poverty stricken region of Bihar, who was born attached to her headless twin.

In a 40 hour operation, doctors successfully removed the lifeless body from Lakshmi Tatma, who was hailed as a reincarnation of Vishnu.

The extraordinary eight-limbed baby was born on the day devoted to the celebration of the four-armed Hindu deity Vishnu.

Since the operation Lakshmi has successfully taken her first steps.

Her mother Poonam Tatma said she believed her daughter was "a miracle".

Catholic Bishops Disappoint Me

I am pissed off by the stand that the CBCP has taken with regard to the ZTE Scam.

In the beginning, I was happy that they were taking a stand against the corruption. Nowadays, they are playing neither the right or left field. They are standing in the middle waiting for pendulum to hit. It's the ultimate mediocrity.

Admittedly, there are as many people who would like for Gloria to stay in office as many as there are demanding for her to resign. Are the Church weighing both sides? These bishops are freaking blind! No, I am not afraid to say that they are a big disappointment to me! I am a Catholic but right now, I am embarrassed that these people are running my Church!

Are they freaking blind? Ignorant? Are they afraid to pay their taxes? Are they afraid to lose Malacañang's generous donations?

The last time Madriaga testified, he showed this email of San Miguel to him where the budget for the "tongpats" (the alleged "commissions" of the Greedy Four) was blatantly written. Is the Church blind to this?

No, you cannot use a Yahoo Email ID already claimed so Madriaga could not have possibly made a similar email. San Miguel admitted that the email was his!

No, you cannot add an attachment to an email sent to you and present this attachment as part of the sender's original email.

No, it's highly impossible that Yahoo has been hacked. Otherwise, Yahoo would probably sue San Miguel. This would raise a big question on the security of the email services of Yahoo.

My Dear Bishops, I believe Cardinal Sin is turning on his grave because of your stand. You disappoint me.

Unforgettable Love Gone Awry

In life we all have an unspeakable secret, an irreversible regret, an unreachable dream and an unforgettable love.
- Diego Marchi

I confessed to all four.

My secret? It's a dark story of a 10-year-old girl that I'd carry to my grave.

My irreversible regret? Should I say regrets? Come to think of it though I have not done anything in my life that I deeply truly regret. I have not done anything that have shaken me to the core of my being that my life was changed irreparably by it.

My unreachable dream. Again, should I say Dreams instead?

My unforgettable love? This is the reason I looked for this quote. I have my own unforgettable love. Growing up I've met a lot of frogs who turned into even uglier toads. The last I met just before I met my husband. That guy was a selfish ass. But there is this one person that would always be remembered by me fondly. Fondly, in fact is an understatement.

I remember my sister bawling over the letters that her first boyfriend gave her years after they broke up. I think that guy will always be her unforgettable love. (I hope my brother-in-law does not read this.)

What drove me to look for this quote though is my husband's ex. Surprise! I do not think of her harshly. She just amazes me by how much she loved Erbe. I do not think I'd be capable of doing half of the things she did just to get him back. Although, at that time I was ready to commit bloody murder because I was at the receiving end of "the things she was doing".

She and some of her friends really tried to make my life a living hell. I had to get some of my friends to accompany me home because I was practically stalked! They were digging dirt on me. They would come up to me on the street or the restaurant picking a fight. Needless to say, they did not succeed.

In the process, my husband had a falling out with them. This was four years ago. During these whole time, Erbe did not speak to them or see them. You can say that he severed his friendship with some of them. I think though that they would say they severed their friendship with him.

The other night though, they called him up. Apparently, they wanted to get together because she was leaving for the States. My husband was understandably surprised. Since he wasn't feeling well and was not quite comfortable with the whole thing, he gently refused.

The next thing we know, they were parked in front of our house. They were there to fetch him! He did not go with them, but you can just imagine my reaction. I don't know about you, but it doesn't seem right, does it?

How To Celebrate Your Birthday

It's My Birthday!

My mother once told me that she feels the way she always had when she was 18 years old. I think I feel the same. I may be aging and pretty soon, I'd be ranting about my hypertension or diabetes. I may be drawing countries across my wrinkled face. I may be losing my teeth or my hair -- but I think I would always feel the same. I will always be the girl I was when I had my first kiss.

My birthday though was never a big deal to me. I guess, it comes with the territory of growing up with your father who never even bothered to greet you a happy birthday. No, my father is not a heartless jackass. He just grew up without having anyone greeting him on his birthday as well.

So, what do I do on my birthday, I usually just buy my mother a bunch of roses or a cake, write her a note thanking her for my life. I think she's the one who deserves all the credits. :)

Evil Exists -- No, it's not Gloria Arroyo this time

For a couple of months now, the country has been abuzz with news of a syndicate allegedly taking school children forcibly. The suspicion is that the children are killed and body organs are sold to Western countries. My cousin has been worried about going home because she walks to school daily. Every time the authorities are asked to comment on this they would deny the veracity of the reports. And after hearing their comments, I would shrugged off the reports.

Until today.

This morning, I woke up with the whole place abuzz with the news that a child was forcibly taken by a group of men. The mother was bawling. You could literally hear her heart breaking.

Now, we all know the reports were not unfounded. A kid living a few houses from ours was taken while walking home from school. The sad thing about it is that I highly doubt if the authorities would ever find him. The sad truth is that he's dead the minute he got in that van. I do not why evil like that exists. I do not understand why people can do things like this.

Are We Good Because We Are Good?

Are we good because we are good, or are we good because temptation never tried us?

Earlier, my aunt called me again. She was furious with a cousin of mine,an attorney. She referred a client to him two years ago and the case was an annulment case. Now, this cousin of mine is actually a brilliant lawyer. So, I was quite shocked and understandably disappointed when I heard about what he has been doing.

Last year, he applied for a position in the Public Attorneys Office and he got the job. It is a rule that if you’re working for the PAO office, you will have to cease handling private cases. A violation of this rule amounts to mortal sin and could result to an eventual disbarment. My cousin apparently continued to handle this particular private case. Well, that would have been morally forgivable, if not administratively allowable, if that was only the case.

His screw up though is not because of his continued acceptance of this case. It appears that he kept asking for money without updating his client of the 2-year long case. Evidently, nothing was happening at all with the case! The client is understandably furious and so is my aunt who referred the client to my cousin. I was concerned because there were talks of reporting my cousin to the Department of Justice. Sadly though, I lost a lot of my respect for him. I’ve always thought of him as an upright and honest lawyer.

He has always been a good person and I believe he still is, but there are temptations that he just couldn’t resist.

So, are we good because we are good, or are we good because temptation never tried us?

I believe that we are good because we are. Or is this that simple? Killing a person, raping a little girl – those are not just responses to temptations. Those are acts that come from an internal source – an evil soul. However, there are things that we do that may be wrong but doing them does not necessarily mean that we are morally corrupt. Still, the bottom line is that no matter how much temptation tries to reel us in, goodness prevails if we are indeed good. This may be just an ignorant view but that’s how I see it. Goodness is tested by temptation but it does not mean that you are only good because you have never been tested. Goodness does not buckle.

A better question though is, “Are we innately good or do we only choose to be good?”

The Meaning of Peace

I came across this story in Paulo Coelho's blog and I had to share it --

I am with the Venezuelan writer Dulce Rojas, drinking coffee in Buenos Aires; we are discussing the idea of peace and how removed it has become from the human heart. Dulce then tells me the following story.

A king offered a large prize to the artist who could best represent the idea of peace. A lot of painters sent their works to the palace, depicting woods at dusk, quiet rivers, children playing on the sand, rainbows in the sky, drops of dew on a rose petal.

The king examined everything that was sent to him, but ended up choosing only two works..

The first showed a tranquil lake that perfectly mirrored the imposing mountains surrounding it and the blue sky above. The sky was dotted with small white clouds and, if you looked closely, in the left-hand corner of the lake there stood a small house with one window open and smoke rising from the chimney - the sign that a frugal but tasty supper was being prepared.

The second painting was also of mountains, but these were bleak and stony with sharp, sheer peaks. Above the mountains, the sky was implacably dark, and from the heavy clouds fell lightning, hail and torrential rain.

The painting was totally out of harmony with the other submissions. However, a closer look revealed a bird’s nest lodged in a crack in one of those inhospitable rocks. In the midst of the violent roaring of the storm, a swallow was calmly sitting on its nest.

When he gathered his court together, the king chose the second picture as the one that best expressed the idea of peace. He explained:

‘Peace is not what we find in a place that is free of noise, problems and hard work; peace is what allows us to preserve the calm in our hearts, even in the most adverse situations. That is its true and only meaning.

Sights and Sounds of My City

I love this city. It's a pretty small one. Something happens in one place, you'd hear about it in no time at all. It has the luxuries of modernity merging with the breeze of old province. You can go from one place to another without having to worry about traffic or getting mugged. Let me share with you the quirks of this city. Morry, you should definitely come for a visit.

Gorgeous, isn't she? Her name is Donita but she's actually gay. The truth is I'm even insecure that she looks way better than me.

I'm Going Through Hell

This is it. My friends texted me informing me that the Bar Exam Results will be up next week. God! I'm going through physical, emotional and mental hell! I have this horrible, horrible knot on my stomach that just wouldn't go away!

I am mentally preparing myself for the result. It's hell -- I tell you. It's pure hell. No, don't wish me luck. Just tell me how to go on with my life if I fail.

Introduction to PayPerPost

I signed up for PayPerPost a few months back but they only approve my blog yesterday.

Introduction to PPP

PayPerPost or PPP is a online advertising program that allows bloggers to earn money from advertising products, services and companies on their blog. If you are an advertiser, PPP would pair you with a blogger who would write about your business on their blog. Advertisers and bloggers are both benefited by this system. The advertisers get positive marketing, feedbacks and reviews; and the bloggers get paid for their work. It’s actually a win-win setup.

Finding PayPerPost

I think it was a couple of months ago when I actually look for ways to earn money from blogging. You see, I have been blogging since 2004 but I was not serious about it. It was after I read a post about PayPerPost that I checked the website out. The signup is really easy. It’s fast and free. What may be come out as a challenge though is getting your blog approved. My blog was not approved automatically. It took a while. It was after my third submission that it was finally accepted. There are guidelines that you have to first follow in order to get your blog approved. I guess I got approved after I bothered to read the guidelines and made the necessary changes.

Making Money from PayPerPost

After you get your blog approved, you’d have access to their Open Opportunities Page and Dashboard where you get to choose the topics/advertisers that you’d write about. Some articles may not be open to you because PPP requires a certain Alexa Ranking or Page Ranking before you could reserve a topic or advertiser you’re particularly interested in. You get paid though for the articles or posts upon acceptance and approval by the PPP. It’s that simple and easy.

Why Join PPP?

PayPerPost is possibly one of the best ways to earn money through blogging. If you have the knack for writing, you can definitely benefit from this program. You get to do what you love most – write – and get paid for it! Amazing!

Weird Weather Premonition

This is not funny anymore.

The flood receded a couple of days ago. So, for a couple of days we had a normal life. We were able to go downstairs, clean our room and slept on our bed. Everything was NORMAL or so I thought

Until the other night.

Things were actually weird that night. At first there was this strong earthquake which prompted us to rush outside the house. Erbe refused to go out because he tucked himself to bed. He likes wrapping himself up in blanket so tight and he doesn't want to budge when he's in that position. I was screaming at him to get up. He can be very, very stubborn. The earthquake lasted for a couple of minutes and the house was really shaking.

Anyway, after the earthquake, we finally settled in for the night until rain suddenly started pouring like crazy. It was accompanied by this really strong wind. It was like a sudden signal 3 typhoon.

It was really scary.

I had this feeling that there would be flood come morning. I shrugged away the feeling though because it was not just sensible. You see, it actually takes at least three to 14 days of heavy rainfall for our place to get flooded.

I was right though.
I woke up with someone knocking on our door. I was surprised to see water all around our bed! Talk about premonition. Apparently, some weird weather phenomenon happened that caused the flood. Weird, huh?

My Sixth Sense?

I came across this entry on the Blogger Exposed about Sixth Sense or intuitions. It was interesting because I totally can relate on her experiences. I left a comment and didn't give it another thought, until she left a message asking me about my own experiences.

This was the first time someone asked me about this. I had a weird childhood so intuitions and sixth sense is nothing strange to me. I guess what I experience now are just remnants of what I used to experience when growing up. You see, it all started with my religiously zealot father. He is also a faith healer.

At a pretty young age, I became a medium.

People would come to our house and my father will do a healing session and I woul be sitting next to him pointing at parts of the "patient's" body where I see dark spots. I do not know if it was all my imagination because I was really, really young. Strangely though, we cured some people.

I remember this man who always came with huge, huge fishes. My father never accepted money or charged anything. So, people (out of gratitude, I think) would bring food like fruits, fishes and bread. Now, this man had a bloated stomach -- huge one. He had an operation but the doctors didn't find anything wrong at all. He went to several quack doctors and they made him drink a lot of concoction. Strangely though, after several sessions with my father, this man's stomach started to grow small.

My weird childhood did not end there. There was a time when a group of treasure hunters would pick me up from our house and bring me to places to point at where the treasures were supposedly located. It was like a game to me because I was really young. It was like having adventures. Don't get me wrong though. I was having fun. I went to school. I had a lot of friends, but this aspect of my life was something I kept secret from my friends. I don't know if they even know about this. Well, I think I told Tin.

Anyway, it all stopped when I began to have huge headaches that I end up in hospitals so many, many times. My mother, who was working abroad while we were small, put a halt to it all. She was furious at my Father for dragging me into all of it.

So, I began to live a pretty normal life (without the healing and treasure hunting), but I always had experiences where I had "feelings" about things and they happen. I also saw "ghosts" pretty regularly. It was weird. One time, we were eating and I felt a hand touching me from head to neck. I began screaming and the other people on the table were all looking at me strangely.

These days I don't see them anymore, but I still get those "feelings" when some thing bad is going to happen. I also have a pretty strong intuition about things.

Boy Raised as a Pet Bird

I came across this story in Daily Mail.

A seven-year-old boy who can only communicate by chirping after his mother raised him as a pet bird has been rescued by Russian care-workers.

Reports in Russian media claim the child, suffering from "Mowgli syndrome", was found in a tiny two-room apartment that appeared to double as an aviary, filled with cages containing dozens of birds, bird feed and bird droppings.

Social worker Galina Volskaya, who helped rescue the "bird-boy" from his home in Kirovsky, Volgograd, told Russian newspaper Pravda that he was treated like another pet by his 31-year-old mother.

Because she never spoke to him, Ms Volskaya explained, the boy's only communication was with the birds he was surrounded by.

"When you start talking to him," she said, "he chirps."

Russian authorities say the child was not physically harmed but is suffering from "Mowgli syndrome", named after the Jungle Book character raised by wild animals, and cannot engage in any normal human communication.

Pravda reported: "(His mother) had her own domestic birds and fed wild ones. (She) neither beat him nor left him without food. She just never talked to him. It was all the birds that communicated with the boy and taught him birds' language.

"He just chirps and when realising that he is not understood, starts to wave hands in the way birds winnow wings."

The boy is temporarily living in an asylum, but soon will be transferred to a centre of psychological care, according to reports.

His mother signed an abdication form to release him into care after he was discovered last week.

Though admittedly unusual, the case is not without precedent.

In February 2006, social workers took three weeks to catch a four-year-old "wolf-boy" discovered living on the streets with a pack of stray dogs and cats in the Stavropol region of southern Russia. Arthur Zverev barked and ran on all fours.

And in January 2007, a Cambodian woman named Rochom P'ngieng was found wandering naked in the jungle, unable to speak after living among animals since she disappeared from home aged eight.
